At China Explorer Tour, we believe in crafting transformative travel experiences that go beyond typical sightseeing. One of the best examples of this is our 5-day Wudang Mountain Tai Chi Retreat, a journey that combines wellness, spirituality, and cultural immersion.

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Janet, a retired pharmacist from Portland, Oregon, who embarked on a journey of self-discovery through the timeless practices of Tai Chi, Wudang swordsmanship, and Taoist philosophy. In this post, we’re excited to share Janet’s firsthand experience and how this retreat transformed her mind, body, and spirit.

A Serene Retreat in the Heart of Tai Chi and Taoism

Wudang Mountain is known as the birthplace of Tai Chi and Taoist philosophy, making it the ideal destination for those seeking personal growth, peace, and deeper spiritual connection.

Janet’s adventure began after a solo trip across Asia, where she fell in love with China, particularly its efficient infrastructure, safe environment, and cultural richness. After returning to the U.S., she found herself longing to revisit China and continue exploring its deep cultural heritage. Janet was particularly drawn to our Wudang Mountain Tai Chi Retreat, intrigued by the idea of learning Tai Chi and the Taoist wellness practices that are integral to Chinese culture.

I’ve always wanted to try Tai Chi because of my shoulder and neck problems, which were caused by overuse. The retreat offered a perfect combination of activities that appealed to my interests.

-Janet

She was drawn to the retreat’s balance of learning Tai Chi, exploring Taoist philosophy, and engaging in healing practices like moxibustion and Qigong breathing.

The Serene Setting of Wudang Mountain

Wudang Tai Chi Retreat

Wudang Mountain is renowned as the birthplace of Tai Chi and Taoism, making it a perfect destination for those seeking a spiritual and cultural immersion. The area is peaceful, surrounded by lush nature and stunning landscapes, offering a calming atmosphere that enhances the retreat experience. For Janet, this natural serenity was one of the retreat’s highlights.

The location is so beautiful and tranquil; the mountain views are breathtaking. I felt completely at peace here.

-Janet

Staying in a clean, comfortable guesthouse with stunning views, participants are fully immersed in the natural beauty of the area, allowing them to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Authentic Tai Chi and Wudang Swordsmanship

One of the main highlights of Janet’s retreat experience was learning authentic Tai Chi from experienced Taoist masters. Known for its slow, deliberate movements, Tai Chi is a martial art that emphasizes relaxation, balance, and inner peace. For Janet, learning Tai Chi at the birthplace of this practice was a dream come true.

“My favorite part of the retreat was learning Tai Chi and Wudang swordsmanship. The focus on fluid movements and the connection to nature really resonated with me. It felt like a beautiful dance.”

-Janet

Under the guidance of experienced Taoist masters, Janet was able to engage in Tai Chi practices and sword techniques that aligned with the philosophy of Taoism.

This experience was not only physical but also spiritual. Tai Chi’s slow, deliberate movements promote mindfulness and meditation, offering a deep sense of connection to both self and nature. The retreat also provided ample time for relaxation and rejuvenation through practices like Taoist meditation and scripture copying, which further nurtured Janet’s mind and soul.

Exploring Taoist Philosophy and Healing Practices

In addition to the Taichi, the retreat also delved into Taoist philosophy, offering insight into the spiritual beliefs that have shaped Chinese culture for centuries. Master Goo, the retreat’s Taoist guide, led participants through the core teachings of Taoism, providing a profound understanding of balance, harmony, and the flow of energy (Qi) within the body.

Janet was particularly impressed with the focus on holistic healing practices. These wellness practices are designed to restore balance to the body and mind, creating an overall sense of well-being and inner peace.

The combination of moxibustion, Qigong breathing, and music therapy was incredibly rejuvenating. I felt so much better both physically and mentally after the sessions.

A Balanced Experience with Cultural Immersion

What sets the Tai Chi Retreat at Wudang Mountain apart from other wellness retreats is the deep immersion into Taoist culture and philosophy. As Janet explored the Taoist traditions, she gained a greater understanding of Taoism’s core principles, including the balance of opposites, the flow of Qi, and the importance of harmony with nature.

The retreat offered so many activities without feeling rushed or too intense. It was spaced out perfectly, so I never felt exhausted, but still had plenty to do.

-Janet

The retreat also provided Janet with an opportunity to engage in Tai Chi meditation and reflect on the wisdom of Taoist masters. By embracing Taoist philosophy, she was able to deepen her understanding of the inner self and the importance of mindfulness in everyday life.

Authentic Chinese Cuisine: A Culinary Delight

For many travelers, experiencing authentic Chinese cuisine is one of the highlights of a cultural journey. At the retreat, Janet was treated to three delicious meals a day, each made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. “You can’t go wrong with the food here! It was so delicious, and every meal was a highlight of the day,” she says. The food is not only nourishing for the body but also adds to the cultural immersion, as it gives participants a deeper connection to the traditions and practices of Chinese culture.

The connection between food, wellness, and Tai Chi is an integral part of the retreat experience. By nourishing the body with fresh ingredients and wholesome meals, Janet found herself feeling energized and rejuvenated, both inside and out.

This retreat has been amazing. I came here to learn Tai Chi and connect with nature, but I left with so much more. It’s been an opportunity to grow spiritually, improve my health, and immerse myself in the beautiful Taoist traditions. I would absolutely recommend China Explorer Tour and the Wudang Tai Chi retreat to anyone. It’s been a life-changing experience, and the staff was incredibly helpful in planning my entire trip.
