A 12-Day Immersive Cultural Experience Across Beijing, Dali, Lijiang, and Shanghai
China is a country that cannot be fully understood from a distance.
To truly experience China, travelers need more than iconic landmarks and carefully planned itineraries. They need opportunities to connect with its history, people, traditions, and the everyday moments that shape its identity.

China Explorer Tour (CET) is a leading China travel agency specializing in bespoke inbound journeys and immersive cultural experiences for international travelers. Through deep local expertise and thoughtful storytelling, CET creates meaningful connections between global visitors and the diverse landscapes, communities, and heritage of China.
Recently, CET had the privilege of designing and operating a 12-day immersive China journey for the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative (ALI) 2025 Fellows, serving as the exclusive China travel partner for this remarkable group.
The journey brought the Fellows through Beijing, Dali, Lijiang, and Shanghai, offering a deeper perspective on China — from its ancient civilization and living traditions to its remarkable modernization and cultural transformation.
Harvard ALI Fellows: Global Leaders Exploring China
The Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative (ALI) is one of Harvard University’s most distinctive leadership programs, bringing together accomplished leaders who have already achieved significant impact in their professional fields and are now seeking to apply their experience toward addressing global challenges.
The 2025 Fellows who joined this China journey came from diverse backgrounds, including business, finance, healthcare, technology, philanthropy, and public service. Many have spent decades leading organizations, shaping industries, and creating meaningful social impact around the world.

For these globally experienced leaders, China was more than a destination — it was an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of a country where ancient civilization, rapid innovation, and profound transformation coexist.
For CET, being entrusted as the exclusive China travel partner for this distinguished group was both an honor and a responsibility.
A Journey Designed for Deeper Understanding
For this group of travelers, the purpose was never simply to visit more places.
It was about creating meaningful encounters — moments where history, culture, and everyday life could be experienced rather than observed from a distance.
Over 12 days, CET guided the Fellows through Beijing, Dali, Lijiang, and Shanghai, revealing different dimensions of China: its historical depth, living traditions, local communities, and remarkable transformation.
At the Great Wall, one guest reflected on her first visit to China twenty years ago.
Standing once again on the ancient bricks, she was amazed not only by the timeless grandeur of the Wall, but also by the dramatic changes she had witnessed across China over the past two decades.
For her, this was more than revisiting a landmark — it was a personal journey through time, allowing her to witness the depth of China’s transformation.

In Dali, the pace of the journey slowed down. Away from busy schedules, the Fellows spent a peaceful morning in a tea garden surrounded by mountain mist, experiencing a quieter rhythm of life. Through hands-on experiences such as Bai tie-dye, they discovered that traditional craftsmanship is not something preserved only in museums — it continues to live through people, communities, and everyday practice.

In Lijiang, cultural understanding came through human connection. Welcomed into a local Naxi family courtyard with freshly brewed tea and genuine smiles, the Fellows experienced the warmth of everyday Chinese hospitality. As one participant shared, what touched her most throughout the journey was not only China’s breathtaking landscapes, but also the “quiet and profound warmth of the Chinese people.”

The journey concluded in Shanghai, where tradition and modernity meet. A Xiaolongbao-making experience became one of the most joyful moments of the trip. Surrounded by laughter and bamboo steamers, the Fellows discovered that food can become a universal language connecting people across cultures. One participant was so inspired by the experience that he asked for the recipe, hoping to recreate the moment for his family back home.

From ancient walls to mountain villages, from traditional craftsmanship to modern cityscapes, these experiences helped transform China from a destination to explore into a country to understand.
Beyond Logistics: The Art of Cultural Translation
A journey of this scale requires much more than transportation, accommodation, and scheduling.
It requires understanding.
Behind this 12-day experience was more than a year of preparation, detailed planning, and countless discussions to ensure every element reflected the curiosity and expectations of the travelers.
For a group composed of accomplished individuals from diverse backgrounds, creating a meaningful experience required flexibility, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of cultural exchange.

The feedback from the Fellows reflected the impact of this approach:
“You accomplished an impossible task — making this a successful trip for a very demanding group. And it worked.”
Another participant described the journey simply as:
“The trip of a lifetime.”
For CET, these words represent more than recognition of operational excellence. They reflect the true meaning of inbound travel.
Building Bridges Between China and the World
At China Explorer Tour, we believe the ultimate purpose of inbound travel is not simply bringing people to China. It is creating opportunities for people to truly see, experience, and understand China. A successful journey does not end when travelers leave. It continues through the stories they share, the perspectives they bring home, and the connections they carry forward.
The Harvard ALI Fellows’ China journey was not only a milestone for CET. It was a reminder of why we exist: To build a bridge between China and the world, one meaningful experience at a time.
We are deeply grateful to the Harvard ALI Fellows for their trust, curiosity, and openness.
And we look forward to continuing to share more stories from this extraordinary journey — stories of culture, connection, and discovery.
