What to Eat in Mudanjiang - Food Lover’s Guide
You simply must try the famous Jingpo Lake Fish Feast, featuring fresh catch from the icy waters served in various savory styles. The local Iron Pot Stew (Tie Guo Dun) is a social dining experience perfect for winter, where meat, vegetables, and cornbread simmer in a large table-center pot. Due to the city’s proximity to the border, you will also find incredible authentic Korean cuisine, from spicy kimchi and sizzling BBQ to the surprisingly popular “Cold Noodles” (Lengmian), which locals love to eat even in the freezing cold!
Where to live in Mudanjiang - Hotel and Area
Choosing where to stay in Mudanjiang depends on which part of the adventure you are on. In the city center, you can find modern, comfortable hotels that serve as a good base for transit. However, the highlight of any trip here is staying in China Snow Town (Xuexiang) itself. Here, we highly recommend booking a traditional Homestay (Guesthouse) where you can sleep on a heated brick bed (Kang). This authentic experience is not only cozy and warm but a cultural staple of Northeastern life, offering families and couples a memorable night in a rustic, fairytale setting.
How to Get Around Mudanjiang: Transportation Tips
Reaching Mudanjiang is easy via high-speed train from Harbin or direct flights, but navigating the snowy terrain to outlying attractions requires planning. The journey from Mudanjiang city to China Snow Town takes about 2 to 3 hours by road on snowy mountain passes. While public buses exist, they can be crowded and infrequent. Therefore, the safest and most comfortable way to explore is by booking a private car or a tour package. This gives you the freedom to stop for photos of the breathtaking white landscapes whenever you wish and ensures you stay warm and safe on the icy roads.
Best things to do in Mudanjiang
You should wander through the streets of Snow Town at night to capture the iconic “dream home” photos, or hike up Yangcao Mountain for a stunning sunrise over the sea of snow. For a fun, viral moment, try the “Splash Water into Ice” experiment, where boiling water instantly turns into ice crystals in the freezing air. We also encourage visiting the Eight Great Ministries site in Hengdaohezi to understand the region’s history, or enjoying a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forests to feel like a true local explorer.
What and Where to Shop in Mudanjiang
Shopping in Mudanjiang focuses on the bounties of the forest and the unique border trade. It is the perfect place to buy high-quality wild forest products such as mushrooms, black wood ear fungus, and local honey, which are famous throughout China for their purity. You can also find authentic Russian goods like chocolates, vodka, and nesting dolls, as well as Korean snacks and condiments. These items make for unique, edible, and cultural souvenirs that perfectly reflect the region’s diverse influences.
