Discovering Ciqikou, one of Chongqing’s most enchanting historical gems, is like stepping into a living museum. The town breathes with stories from a thousand years past, its winding alleys and ancient architecture holding layers of history, culture, and mystery. Nestled in Chongqing’s Shapingba District, Ciqikou sits by the banks of the Jialing River, about 14 kilometers from Chongqing’s city center and a quick 5-kilometer trip from Shapingba’s bustling heart.
Origins of Ciqikou: From Dragon Hidden Town to Porcelain Haven
Originally known as Longyin Town (Dragon Hidden Town), Ciqikou’s history dates back to the Song Dynasty, when it was first called Baiyan Chang, after the White Rock Temple that once stood here. The name later evolved as the town’s fortunes shifted. In 1402, a cloistered emperor, Zhu Yunwen, who fled to this region to escape his uncle’s pursuit, sought refuge at the Baolun Temple on White Rock Mountain. Locals gradually adopted a new name, Dragon Hidden Town, in honor of this hidden emperor.
Ciqikou eventually became the town’s name as the local porcelain industry flourished. The town’s identity shifted from an emperor’s refuge to a thriving ceramics hub. By the early Qing Dynasty, artisans from Jiangxi brought their porcelain-making expertise, and Ciqikou earned renown as a pottery center, hosting over 70 workshops by the Republic of China era. “Ciqi” (porcelain) morphed into “Ciqi” (magnetic) in the local dialect, giving Ciqikou its final name.
