What to Eat in Sichuan - Food Lover’s Guide

Sichuan cuisine is famous for its complex “Ma La” profile, utilizing Sichuan peppercorns to create a numbing sensation. A culinary-focused China travel package here is a pilgrimage; you must gather around a bubbling vat of Sichuan Hot Pot, dipping meats and vegetables into the spicy oil. Don’t miss the classics in their authentic form: silken Mapo Tofu, diced Kung Pao Chicken, and the savory Twice-Cooked Pork. At China Explorer Tour, we create China food tours that guide you to the hidden “Fly Restaurants” (small local eateries) in Chengdu to taste the real soul of the cuisine, far better than any version you’ve had abroad.

How to Get Around Sichuan: Transportation Tips

Navigating Sichuan requires a mix of high-speed rail and private transport. As highlighted in our Sichuan travel guide, Chengdu is the massive transport hub with two international airports. The High-Speed Rail connects Chengdu to Leshan, Emei, and Mianyang in under an hour. However, for the stunning Western Sichuan loop (including Bipenggou and Jiuzhaigou), public transport is limited and roads can be winding. Therefore, booking a private car and driver through a China travel package is the safest and most comfortable option, allowing you to stop for photos of yaks and snow mountains whenever you wish without the stress of driving on mountain passes.

Best things to do in Sichuan

The best things to do in Sichuan involve engaging with the local lifestyle and nature. Beyond seeing Pandas, your China trip should include spending an afternoon in a Chengdu Teahouse, getting your ears cleaned (a local tradition), and chatting with locals. You should watch a magical Sichuan Opera “Face Changing” show, a dramatic art form unique to the region. For adventurers, hiking in Yading Nature Reserve offers some of the most spectacular alpine trekking in the world. We also recommend volunteering at a Panda Base to prepare bamboo for the bears. At China Explorer Tour, we curate these immersive experiences to ensure your Sichuan vacation is rich with memories.

What and Where to Shop in Sichuan

Shopping in Sichuan is a treat for those who love culture and flavor. It is the premier place in your China travel package to buy authentic Sichuan Peppercorns and Pixian Chili Bean Paste, the soul of local cooking. You should also look for Shu Brocade and Embroidery, known for its intricate craftsmanship. In the Tibetan areas of Western Sichuan, you can find beautiful Thangka paintings and silver jewelry. Tea lovers should buy Zhu Ye Qing (Green Bamboo Leaf) tea from Mount Emei. As your Sichuan travel guide, we recommend exploring the Jinli Ancient Street or local spice markets for the best souvenirs, ensuring you bring a piece of the “Land of Abundance” home.

FAQ's

Find answers to your questions before joining a tour so that you can find out exactly what you want to know. If you have more question please feel free to reach us via contact form.

While famous for spice, not everything is hot. Dishes like Sweet Skin Duck, tomato-broth hot pot, and various snacks are non-spicy. As a China travel agency, we can customize meals to suit your palate.

No! This is the beauty of Western Sichuan. It offers authentic Tibetan culture (Amdo and Kham regions) but is open to international travelers without the special Tibet Entry Permit required for Lhasa. It is the easiest way to experience the plateau on a China adventure.

Currently, direct physical contact (holding/hugging) with pandas is suspended for health and safety reasons. However, Panda Volunteer programs allow you to get very close, clean enclosures, and prepare food. We can arrange this as part of your China tour.

It is high! Places like Huanglong and Yading can reach 3,000m to 4,000m+ (10,000-13,000 ft). Altitude sickness is possible. We recommend acclimating in Chengdu first.

Spring (March-June) and Autumn (September-November) are best. Autumn is particularly stunning in Western Sichuan (like Bipenggou and Jiuzhaigou) for fall colors.
